Welcome to the SGUL First Aid Society

The First Aid Society gives students the opportunity to learn first aid through awareness sessions and volunteering. We meet every Tuesday @ 6:30pm and hold regular fundraising events and social nights.

We are a St John Ambulance Student Volunteering unit that provides first aid cover at public events across London as well as at SU and society events at St George's. St John Ambulance is the UK’s leading first aid charity, teaching over 400,000 people first aid every year.

Volunteer first aiders can progress to becoming advance first aiders, emergency/non-emergency volunteer ambulance crews, cycle responders or medical response teams. If this peaks your interest visit our Instagram page or email us for more information.

Signing Onto Duties

When you have found a duty you would like to do, met the requirements for and are free to help out with: you now need to sign up to that duty. The page will guide you through the two / three steps needed.

Step One: Sending Off Your Request Via LINKS Server

1. Log onto the the London LINKS Server.

2. Once in, you should see the main menu (which will be similar to the image below). If your London ID card has been sorted, then a green box will display and you will have access to the training course and operations menu. Click on 'Operations (Duties)' then 'Duty Signup'.

> >

3. You will then be presented with the duty signup form. The form is a little outdated and looks a bit confusing but we've got a guide below.

Date / Times

The date and time of the duty you want to go on.

Please fill into this box:

  • The DIPS number / code for the duty so it becomes easier to find on the system. The code is an eight digit number with a slash (e.g. 2012/1001).

Step Two: Processing The Request & Awaiting Confirmation

Once you sent off your request, the operation officer and duty manager then has to process it. You will get an email sent to the email account you used to register with St John Ambulance denoting the status of your request:

Status
Rejected

Your request has been rejected / denied by the Operations Officer. This may be because: you fail to meet the requirements to go on duty, you fail to meet the required skill level of the duty, there are no places remaining or you sent in your request too late for it to be processed.

Declined

Your request has been declined by the Duty Manager, or there is insufficient equipment in our store cupboard to send you out. Note that the Duty Manager's word is final; the Operations Officer has no say in it and will not be able to argue against it.

Provisionally Booked

Your request has been sent off and the Operation Officer is now waiting for the Duty Manager to confirm it. This does NOT mean your place has been booked and you can go on duty: you must wait for it to be officially confirmed.

Confirmed

Your request has been accepted and you are booked onto the duty. If you need equipment from the store cupboard, you can now go and request it.

If your request has been turned down, the email will tell you why. If your request has been rejected, declined or is still only provisionally booked, DO NOT GO the duty. Be warned - if you go on duty without you being confirmed by the Operations Officer: the Duty Manager will not be expecting and you will not be allowed into the grounds. Not only that, you may find yourself bared from certain duties as a result. You must wait for your request to be confirmed. The email from the Operation Officer will also contain additional information such as the meeting location, the Duty Manager's contact details, and event details (such as expected attendance, if there's free food or toilets etc). If the event has an operational plan, the Operations Officer will send you this too - please make sure you read it before you go on to the duty. Please make sure you check your emails regularly.

Step Three: Loaning Uniform And / Or Kit From Store Cupboard

Now that you have been confirmed; if you need to loan equipment from the store cupboard please now fill in the Duty Uniform and Kit Request Form. If you have your own complete set of equipment, you do not need to fill out the form. Our unit's store cupboard holds a limited store of Green / Black Revisable St John Ambulance Fleeces, Hi-Vis Coats, Light-Vis Tabards and First Aid Response Kits which can be loaned to members going out on duty. More instructions can be found on the form page.

You will need to come to the Student Union to pick up and sign out the equipment. You cannot send someone else to pick it up for you. You are held responsible for any and all uniform and kit we loan you for your duty. Please make sure you send in your request for uniform and kit as soon as you have been confirmed. Not only does this give us enough time to sort out your request; but it also increases the likelihood that you will get your uniform / kit as our stock is limited. If we are run out of stock, unfortunately we will have decline your request and pull you off your duty.
