SGUL Psychiatry Society
We explore topics relating to mental health and psychiatry through talks, workshops, discussions and perhaps a little wine! Psychiatry is about asking the right questions and our events aim to bring healthcare professionals, patients, and advocates to answer yours. Students from all courses, interested in any aspect of healthcare, are invited to participate.
Last year was very successful for the society as we held a number of events that were well attended and covered a wide range of topics. The year started with two successful fresher’s fayres, gathering over 100 new members! We held a talk on addiction and gambling that was hosted by a psychiatrist and an expert patient and also talks on dementia and bipolar diseases. The talks were both very interesting and enriching and gave our members a great insight into the subjects.
We organised several social events including our first ‘Psychiatry in the Pub’ event where we discussed the ethics of euthanasia in the context of psychiatric illness. This was a casual conversation that enabled everyone to express and explore their opinions on the topic.
We also had a very interesting focus group supported by the RcPsych. Throughout the year, we presented many opportunities in terms of conference bursaries, summer schools and essay prizes to our members to encourage them to make the most of the opportunities out there.
Before this year end, we will hold Medfest which for the last 3 years has been a real success and a mock OSCE for our P-year students.
