Arriving as a refugee in the UK can be a terrifying and disempowering experience. Difficulties with language, accessing services and overcoming prejudice are ever-present. As people fleeing persecution, torture and prejudice, refugees need and deserve our support.
STAR is a national network of students working together to improve the lives of refugees and asylum seekers in the UK.
Our St. George’s STAR branch will be working in partnership with Community Action for Refugees and Asylum Seekers (CARAS), an organisation supplying holistic support for refugee and asylum-seeking families in South London.
We will be working with refugee and asylum-seeking children to help them play a full part in their community and overcome challenges they face. This will be done through:
- volunteering help through after-school clubs, dance & music classes, and a football club for the kids
- opportunities for campaigning to advocate for the rights of refugees
- talks from journalists/activists/healthcare professional in the field
