Student Action for Refugees
STAR is a national network of students working together to improve the lives of refugees and asylum seekers in the UK. The St George’s STAR branch will be working in partnership with Community Action for Refugees and Asylum Seekers (CARAS), an organisation supplying holistic support for refugee and asylum-seeking families in South London.
We will be working with refugee and asylum-seeking children to help them play a full part in the local community and overcome any challenges they face. This will be done through:
volunteering in after-school clubs, dance and music classes, and a football club
opportunities for campaigning to advocate for the rights of refugees
talks from journalists, activists and healthcare professionals
We hold training sesions for volunteers at the beginning of the academic year, run in conjunction with a STAR representative. CARAS also run training sessions if you would like to join their volunteer team.
We had a wonderful year with a number of talks including a training session run with Doctors of the World on working with vulnerable individuals, and a discussion forum about child migration. We held a sucessful Christmas present collection and presents were distrubuted at the STAR youth group. We also worked hard on our two main campaigns Families Together, and Equal Access.
We are a friendly society and welcome new members to join us. Visit our social media pages to find out more information. We look forward to wecloming you as a member of our society!
