The Firebirds!

The Firebirds – St George’s cheerleading team – have recently become national champions. Competing at the University Nationals in Birmingham, they were awarded first place in the University Level 1 Co-ed Division.

The competition pits university cheerleading teams from across the country against each other.

Second year medic, and St George’s Cheerleading and Gymnastics Captain, Nick Davis explained a little bit more about the sport and the significance of the achievement.

“Cheerleading as a sport involves a group of athletes performing a two minute and thirty second routine combining stunting, dancing, jumps and gymnastics tumbling to custom music”

“[Teams] are scored based on the difficulty and technique of the various components as well as our overall routine composition and performance.”

“The sport itself has struggled through the years to be recognised as an official sport however recently it was given Preliminary Status as an Olympic Sport with performances expected at Tokyo 2020.”

Nick was also keen to stress that the sport is accessible to all at St George’s, regardless of prior experience.

“This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Firebirds, and the sport team has developed massively over this past decade.”

“Most of the members of our squads are new to cheerleading on joining university however we strive to be as inclusive as possible, being open to any ability level, with recreational as well as competitive squads.”

National Undergraduate Neuroanatomy Competition

Two St George’s medical students have recently won prizes at the National Undergraduate Neuroanatomy Competition. Hosted at the University of Southampton, the competition aims to promote and celebrate neuroscience, neurosurgery and neurology.

Final year medic Jordan Colman won first place in the clinical category, a highly competitive field involving 125 of the best medical students in the UK. Neha Kallam, third year medic, was awarded a distinction for being placed among the top ten participants at the event.

It is the sixth year running that St George’s students have excelled at the competition with Neha winning first place in the preclinical category last year.

“This was my third year participating in the NUNC, but the first time in the clinical category.

“A couple of years ago I went to neuroanatomy sessions run by Paul Johns. This year, Jordan and I set up sessions to teach and discuss neuroanatomy to people also interested in the competition, which helped a lot in learning.”

On winning the award, Jordan says, “I have previously been mentored by Dr Paul Johns for the competition and prepared this year by studying with a group of other students, as well as teaching younger students in the dissecting room as a demonstrator.”

“I plan on pursuing neurology and neuroscience research in the future and hopefully the award and the knowledge I have gained preparing for the competition will help me achieve this.
