Being On Society Committees

SU Societies - Being on Committee

The SU has dozens of student-run societies, with each being run completely by Members, for Members.

If you want to get involved with running a society, there's lots of different ways you can do this!

Joining a Society

If you want to join a society, it's as simple as going along to a society event and getting involved! You can find out about all the societies on offer by visiting our Club & Socs page - you can find every society here, along with information on where and when they meet, and contact details for the current committee.

Once you're a society member, you can get involved with everything the society does, including being a Committee Member. Each society has its own Constitution that sets out what roles are available within their society Committee. Every society has a President and Treasurer, but some have many more roles - from events secretaries, to team captains, to social media managers and fundraising officers.

If there's a particular society that you'd love to be involved in, each society runs their own committee elections throughout the year - if you're a society member, you can run for their Committee positions and take part in the voting process.

Starting a Society

If you can't see the society you want to be part of, why not start one up? Every year, the SU gains new societies, as passionate Members start new groups up to focus on a particular interest, activity or passion of theirs. Starting a new society is as simple as filling out a Starter Pack and presenting it at a Union Progress Meeting. Once the society gets the green light, you'll be a member of a brand new society's Committee.

Benefits of Committee Membership

Being a part of a society Committee is a great way to get involved with your interests, and get the most out of your time at University.

Society Committee membership lets you run and manage a completely student-led group, shaping the way that the society runs and operates. You get to be part of making student experience for all the Union' Members even better! It's a great way to start getting some experience of organising events, managing projects, and showcasing your interests. It's also a great way to get more involved in the Union, and learning about all the ways that the Elected Members of the Union slot together to create the SU as it stands.
