Welcome to the St George’s Men’s Hockey Club. We welcome new members regardless of ability or previous experience on a hockey pitch and our current members include international players. We are a competitive team and historically we have been very successful. We are a close-knit group and maintaining good relationships with each other off the pitch is very important to us. Being part of our club is a great way to socialise with other students we and join other George's sports teams on a Wednesday evening after matches, regardless of the result, in the SU bar or at a local curry house.
We have close links with club hockey teams, for example, London Edwardians, who play on Saturdays, if this is something you are interested in then it can be easily arranged and is perfectly manageable alongside university hockey.
We host several social events throughout the year, including many with the ladies hockey team. In particular, we have an annual weekend tour to a European city. Previous locations include Berlin, Lisbon and Prague. The men’s, ladies’ and mixed clubs always celebrate at the end of the season with a black tie ball with a sit-down meal at a classy establishment followed by an after-party. All socials are great fun and enjoyed by all regardless of your tastes and alcohol is always optional!
We train on Monday nights 7pm - 9pm at St Marks Church of England Academy, Acacia Rd, Mitcham CR4 1SF. The school is 20 minutes from St George's and is easily accessible by bike and public transport. We often arrange lifts between members so please let us know if you need help getting to the school. We are coached by our captain and other senior players and are lucky enough to have several alumnus of the club who return to coach sessions every few weeks.
We compete in the BUCS university league on Wednesday afternoons and also in the BUCS knockout cup. Our home games are played at Surbiton Hockey Club,Sugden Rd, Thames Ditton KT7 0AE. We also participate in the University Hospital’s Cup, which is a fiercely contested cup competition between the medical schools in London.
