We’re definitely one of the closest knit clubs at George’s, with two competitive teams as well as lots of social players. We have players of all abilities at our club and try to be as inclusive as we possibly can. Getting involved in sports teams allows you to meet loads of people outside of your year and course and you develop some really amazing friendships!
Socials are a big part of our club – some of these include Wednesday night sports circles at the SU, curry nights in Tooting and our end of year hockey dinner, where you get the chance to put on your glad rags, have a fancy 3 course meal and a fair few glasses of wine! The highlight of the year though is definitely the hockey tour, where we spend a fabulous weekend bonding in a different European city every year (previous years include Valencia, Prague and Lisbon). Alcohol is optional but dressing up and having a good laugh is always compulsory! We often have joint socials with the guy’s hockey team and lots of us are also involved in mixed hockey so we get to know everyone really well (some better than others…).
Both teams play in South Eastern BUCS leagues and also take part in the BUSCs knockout cup each year. Matches generally happen on a Wednesday afternoon: our home pitch is Surbiton Hockey Club and away matches take place around London, Surrey and Kent. We always try to head to matches as a team, so don’t worry about getting lost! Training is on Mondays 7pm - 9pm at St Marks Church of England Academy in Mitcham (CR4 1SF) – easily accessible by bus and bike from Horton Halls. Sports circles take place on Wednesday evenings in the SU after our matches.
We hope we’ve convinced you that hockey is the club to join! We’re all very friendly and a lot of fun and we can’t wait to meet you! Follow our social media pages to keep up to date with match and social event information.
