MIND THE GAP: addressing INEQUALITIES IN global HEALTH
12th March 2016, St George's University of London.

“MIND THE GAP – Addressing Inequalities in Global Health” is a one day national conference held at St George’s, University of London, that will tackle the complex and challenging notion of inequality in a wide array of contexts.

SPEAKER 1: Dr. David McCoy, Director of Medact.
- Medact is a charity for health professionals and others that educates, analyses, and campaigns for global health on issues related to conflict, poverty and the environment.
- Dr. McCoy is a public health physician and academic who has previously worked as Director of Public Health London and was co-Managing Editor of the first two alternative world health reports (Global Health Watch).
SPEAKER 2: Dr. Jessica Allen, Deputy Director, Institute of Health Equity
- The Institute of Health Equity was launched to build on previous work to tackle inequalities in health led by Professor Sir Michael Marmot and his team, including the ‘Commission on Social Determinants of Health’ and ‘Fair Society Healthy Lives’ (The Marmot Review).
- Dr. Allen's main activities are working to embed a social determinants approach to health inequalities in England and globally. She was co-director of the Review of Social Determinants of Health and the Health Divide in the WHO European Region and was previously Project Director of the Strategic Review of Health Inequalities in England post-2010 (the Marmot Review).
SPEAKER 3: Miss Swee Chai Ang, Founding Trustee and Patron, Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP), Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, London
Dr Ang Swee Chai is the first female consultant orthopaedic surgeon to be appointed at Barts Hospital. In 1982, she went to Beirut to help civilian war victims there. She was the surgeon on duty during the Sabra and Shatila massacres, and then went on to Jerusalem to testify as an eyewitness before the Kahan Commission of Inquiry into the genocide. In 1987, she was awarded the “Star of Palestine”, the highest award for services to the Palestinian people. On her return to Britain, she help to found the charity Medical Aid for Palestinians.
SPEAKER 4: Dr. Carwyn Rhys Hooper, Senior Lecturer Medical Ethics and Law, St. George's University of London.
Dr Hooper is a member of a Clinical Ethics Committee and an Ethics Review Board at SGUL. He is also the secretary of the Institute of Medical Ethics (IME) and Chair of the IME Research Committee. In addition, he is a member of the UNESCO Chair in Bioethics Research Department and the UNESCO International Forum of Ethics Teachers. Dr Hooper is especially interested in public health ethics, global health ethics and e-Learning. He has published widely in medical, educational and bioethics journals and writes a popular column/blog about medical ethics.
