Welcome to St George’s Cheerleading Society
Who are we? We are St George’s competitive cheerleading team, Firebirds! We offer two different competitive sports, cheerleading (stunting) and pom (dance).
What is cheerleading? Cheerleading is a high energy, uplifting team sport recognised by the International Olympic Committee which includes elements from gymnastics, acrobatics and dance. Every year we have a competitive team that brings a two and a half minute routine to external competitions. Routines are scored based on things such as synchronisation, difficulty, and performance. Come along to our taster sessions to see for yourself what it’s all about!
What is pom? Pom is a team dance sport where we perform a jazz style routine with pom poms! Throughout the year we focus on dance technique whilst also putting together a routine to take to competitions across the UK. The Pom team is all about bonding, inclusivity and team energy. We learn, progress and perfect our team together.
None of the 2022-2023 Inferno team members had done Pom before and from totally different backgrounds from those who have never danced before to those who had danced for years, we all went in with an open mind, high energy levels and with a lot of support from our amazing coaching team (Ellie and Laura) we smashed our first season! This year we are coming back with a strong, fun and fierce spirit and we welcome and are super excited to see faces old and new to join the team this season!
What experience do I need? Absolutely none! The vast majority of our athletes are completely new to the sport. The team is very accessible to newbies and to students of all ages and genders, and we encourage everyone to come along to taster sessions and try outs to have a go!
When do we train? Training sessions occur in the evenings, once or twice a week depending on the team. We also run extra sessions including gymnastics and fitness classes where we can work on building higher level skills and improving our technique! We also have the privilege to train at an external gym with a full sprung floor to prepare for competitions.
Where do we compete? Cheer and Pom teams will be competing at external competitions, often in London but also across the UK. This year we will also be holding our own showcase to display our routines to friends and family.
What do we offer outside the competitive teams? Our society is open to all who want to come to socials, fitness classes and gymnastics classes, so everyone can come and be part of the team!
Why join? Cheerleading is a great way to keep active, and an amazing opportunity to make some life-long friends. Firebirds are known for having lots of fun both in and out of training sessions, with some amazing socials and a fun-filled team tour, last year going to Barcelona!

Our achievements
Congratulations for last season to both our remarkable cheer teams, Heatwave (Level 1) and Ignite (Level 2), as well as our brand-new pom team Inferno! The teams all brought amazing routines to the competition floor, with Ignite and Heatwave both winning national championships in their divisions at Legacy Birmingham! Ignite also achieved the title of grand champions last year, a huge success for the team! We can't wait to bring this energy back for next season!
