The main focus of this day-long course will be to teach you all the practical things that medical school and finals did not cover about being a junior doctor on the wards.

At Podmedics we take pride in being great at explaining stuff in a simple and memorable way. Starting work as an F1 is really stressful (have you seen Junior Doctors!?). We want to ease that pain.

The course will be delivered by Dr Ed Wallitt, founder of Podmedics, and Dr Rob Greenhalgh, an F1 at the end of his first year.

We shall be covering:

Surviving your first week
Core organisational skills (e.g. writing in notes, patient lists)
Common ward calls (what you actually do)
Prescribing (including the common drugs and dosages you need to know)
Using technology to help (will also include copies and a practical demo of our new iPhone apps for F1 - Houseofficer and Induction)
Hospital communication skills (getting scans, making referrals etc)

Professor Parveen Kumar, Professor of Medicine and Education at Barts and the London, Queen Mary, University of London, will be talking on ‘Careers beyond clinical medicine’. She changed the face of medical publishing when she co-authored Kumar and Clark’s ‘Clinical Medicine’ in 1989 (8th edition 2012). She is a past vice-president of the RCP, president of the BMA, president of the Royal Society of Medicine, chairman of the Medicines Commission UK, and a founding non-executive director of NICE. She has been involved with medical education, both under- and post-graduate, and examines for MBBS, PACES and other PG degrees, both home and abroad.

So having followed on from the initial interest that was shown for Thorpe Park, we are pleased to announce that we finally have our first Fresher gathering planned! It will be a day full of thrills and would provide us all with an opportunity to take a break amidst our hard-core revision. The arrangement of the day will involve a coach picking us up outside the university taking us directly to Thorpe Park and then getting dropped off back at the university in the evening.

Date: 27/05/2013
Meet up location: St George’s University
Meet up time: 07:50 (As we would be travelling by coach and want to make sure we get there for slightly before the opening time to make the most of the day)
Departure time: 18:20 (Thorpe park closes at 18:00)
Price: £40 per person (includes ticket and coach travel costs)
Deadline for payments: 13/05/2013 by 15:00 but please don't leave it until the last minute.

This option for £40 only works out slightly more expensive than taking public transport to Thorpe Park but it is a lot more convenient, and it guarantees you entry (unlike the 2-for-1 tickets).

We promise you all, that this would be a day to remember and it would be good to see a lot of you there on our first of many Fresher gatherings to come. If you have any questions at all, please do not hesitate to ask us.

Who should come?

This course is aimed at medical students approaching their first clinical year examinations.

What is on offer?

The weekend will feature 2 intensive days of lectures on core clinical medical topics.

Speakers

The lectures are provided by experienced Consultant Physicians from the NHS and who come with great experience in teaching and Medical Education. The majority of sessions will be given by our most experienced lecturer, Dr Adam Feather. Dr Feather is a Consultant General Physician at Barts Health, a senior lecturer in Medical Education and also Head of Final Year at Barts & The London. He has authored numerous OSCE and EMQ/MCQ revision texts and has been an External Examiner for most London medical schools.

The course includes;

Copies of that day's slides on arrival
Sandwich lunch
Refreshments at morning and afternoon break
The opportunity to meet medical students from other London schools

Perrin lecture theatre is situated within 5 minutes walk of Whitechapel underground station.

This week-long event is aimed at helping medical undergraduates develop a strong clinical, academic and research portfolio that will help them to pursue a career in a competitive surgical or medical speciality on completion of medical school. It will also help students obtain essential knowledge about their chosen speciality and develop the confidence to interact with consultants whilst undertaking clinical placements. During previous years, this event was supported, amongst others, by The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, UG department of Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, Medical Protection Society, The British Royal Navy (2010-11), The University of Dundee (2011), The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow (2011), British Orthopaedic Association (2011), British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons (2011), The Royal College of Surgeons of England (2010), The Royal College of General Practitioners (2010), Royal Society of Medicine (2010), British Medical Association (2010) and UK Space Biomedicine Association (2010).

On day 1 of the course, Consultants from various specialities will provide the students with an overview ('taster') of different specialities. This will be particularly beneficial for students who wish to get a better understanding of the various career options and are yet to decide on a particular speciality.

On days 2 and 3, in addition to essential theoretical information about individual specialities, there will be sessions on basic surgical and suturing skills, basic life support, advanced life support, advanced trauma life support, basic orthopaedic skills, laparoscopic skills, performing an ECG, undertaking ultrasound examination and certain medical procedures such as inserting a central line.

The fourth day of the course will provide the student with pertinent information on various academic/research aspects such as intercalating and carrying out clinical and basic science research (leading to MSc/MRes/MPhil/PhD). This day will also cover aspects related to undertaking clinical audits, oral and poster presentations, and publications, as well as discuss the pertinent aspects of academic training/academic career.

On the morning of the final day of the course, the students will be given necessary information on developing and nurturing a portfolio, recent advances and future of their chosen speciality, and tips on entering a specialist training programme. In the afternoon, there will be three parallel sessions on careers outside the traditional curriculum. This will include talks from appropriate leaders who will provide information on careers in Conflict and Military Medicine (with talks from the Royal Air Force, Army and Navy), Space Medicine, and International Medicine and Public Health (with talks from the World Health Organisation, United Nations and Médecins Sans Frontières).

Mentorship by Consultants and Specialists will be offered for interested students.

Lively social events will be available every day after the course and will take advantage of the long summer evenings!

We are pleased to announce the date for the 5th Basic Biomechanics in 
Orthopaedics (BBiOrth) course, which shall be taking place on Saturday 
15th June 2013, at The Royal Society of Medicine. It is aimed at junior 
doctors and junior registrars, who would like to increase their 
understanding of Orthopaedics. The participants will learn about the key 
biomechanical principles that must be considered in making Orthopaedic 
decisions. This understanding will help to make the clinical practice in 
Orthopaedics more rewarding, and stimulate further enthusiasm for the 
specialty.

The course is well established now and has been very well received by 
the medical students and doctors alike. The course is awarded 6 CPD by 
The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. The places are limited.

Students pay a reduced rate of £150. Places to medical students are 
limited for students to only 7. If two people attend the course together 
on the same day, both can receive a further £10 discount each.
