Mature Students and Postgraduates

Too many people stereotype students as always being in the late-teen/ early 20s age range with no commitment, responsibilities and interested in nothing other than alcohol and dodgy music. Obviously this is inaccurate. Many students do not conform to that stereotype (except the dodgy music, who doesn’t love a bit of Chesney?!)

A number of issues are relevant to mature students in particular. For those who have taken a degree previously and are not eligible for the normal maintenance grant, or for those who have a house, spouse or dependants to pay for, financial worries may prove a big problem. It may be necessary to work in the evenings, on weekends and during the holidays.

The Mature Students Union (MSU) acts to promote the interests of mature students and act on their behalf. It works closely with NUS and represents you on the Mature Students National Committee. Their website can be found at www.msu.org.uk

If you are a postgraduate, the ULU website offers advice aplenty specific to your situation, so if you are experiencing any form of difficulty, or just want to be put in touch with organisations that represent mature students, they are the people to call... Check out the website: www.ulu.co.uk
